exalt’s Mission

exalt provides a rigorous educational-internship experience with career development opportunities for NYC’s court involved youth ages of 15-19. Our mission is to elevate expectations of success for court-involved youth. exalt is the first program in NYC designed for and exclusively serving justice system-involved youth on a voluntary basis (versus compliance), and consistently demonstrating positive impact on young people’s court cases.

Core Program Model

Incorporating exalt’s basic tenets (humanize, validate, motivate, inspire), our core model empowers youth by building their sense of self-worth and cultivating tangible skills through 4 rigorous components.

1. Teaching four core foundational life skills - communication, creative problem-solving, critical thinking and resource management - through pre/post internship classes.

2. Individualized planning, advocacy and support - our court advocacy strategies are key to our successful sentence reduction outcomes.

3. Paid internships for exposure to diverse career opportunities - through our growing base of internship partnerships comprised of small businesses/non-profits throughout NYC. We currently have 90 active internship partners representing various sectors, such as New Lab, VICELAND, and the Innocence Project.

4. Alumni network - our graduate programming currently consists of post-graduate extended internships, individual education/career counseling, and monthly career workshops. Current graduate partners include Credit Suisse, NPower, VOCALNY, St. Ann’s Warehouse, The Intrepid Museum, and Google.

exalt closely tracks data and we have seen tremendous success over the past 12 years. More than 90% of our graduates have had no additional convictions. 92% of our graduates earned their high school diploma or are on track to earn a high school diploma by age 20. Most importantly, our graduates tell us that being part of exalt has changed their lives for the better over the long-term.
