Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Project

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is excited to bring its resources and relationships to community-based organizations focusing on improving Brooklyn’s neighborhood retail districts. The Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Project, through the Chamber’s not-for-profit affiliate, the Brooklyn Alliance, helps by partnering and identifying local businesses, community groups and relevant stakeholders, and aims to strengthen and assist small business and merchant-led community organizations. The Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Project provides resources to help businesses grow and provides organizational capacity building for the upstart or upkeep of local merchant groups. Initiatives include Merchant Organizing, advising on Business Improvement District (BID) formation, BID management services, and coordinating supplemental services around sanitation, beautification, and promotion.

The goals of the project are to:

  • Assist local commercial districts in organizing or expanding a merchant association by initiating organizational structures that are sustainable and autonomous
  • Improve physical conditions to create inviting shopping corridors by developing and executing strategies to enhance business districts with streetscape and beautification improvements
  • Connecting Brooklyn’s business community with technical resources, such as financing, hiring, marketing and minority certification to help a merchant grow their business
  • Understand the local consumer base and develop a framework to market businesses and the commercial district as a desirable place to shop
  • Support efforts to maintain positive and productive relationships with relevant stakeholders by bridging these groups and providing a unified voice to speak with government agencies and elected officials
  • Gain visibility through timely events, tours and promotional support
