Communications Director

This position reports to the Chief Policy Officer and is responsible for developing a robust marketing plan for the organization including publicizing and promoting the work of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, its membership, and related corporations through a variety of channels, including press, social media and advertising.  

The Communications Director is also responsible for assignments from the President & CEO and for Brooklyn Chamber membership and retention work, as all Brooklyn Chamber staff assist with the enrollment and retention of members. 

Specific Duties:  

  • Recurring communications tasks:
    • Prepare/design Chamber emails to membership and segmented lists for events and announcements
    • Work with members to share their news and announcements through Chamber communications channels via social media, e-newsletter, and website postings
    • Oversee and implement traditional public relations strategy
    • Prepare the Brooklyn Buzz (weekly e-newsletter)
    • Review and edit all external publications, marketing collateral, press releases
    • Design marketing collateral, as needed
    • Maintain and share press clips
    • Write remarks, as needed
  • Manage the Brooklyn Chamber’s digital communications
    • Manage social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn
      • Create/update social media graphics for branded events, special announcements, holidays, news
      • Create copy for social media posts
      • Monitor and track social media analytics along with recommending strategies for greater impact
    •  The Brooklyn App
      • Coordinate/create wall posts, announcement, event postings
      • Engage with members via comments, messages
      • Manage back-end portal as administrator
    • Brooklyn Chamber website
      • Keep pages up to date with relevant content and graphics
  • Be accountable for quality control to ensure that all website and social media content is appropriate, correct and functioning properly
  • Photography during events, as needed
    • Organize and archive Chamber photographs
  • Regular staffing of organizational events, which include early mornings, evenings and occasional weekends


  • A Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Extremely strong written and verbal communications skills. Highly skilled writer/editor
  • Knowledge and experience with e-marketing, social media techniques, and web analytics
  • Highly organized, with excellent project management skills. Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines under pressure, and consistently deliver high quality results
  • Strong emotional intelligence
  • Independently motivated but also a true team player
  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office products, including PowerPoint
  • Graphic design experience preferred, including InDesign and Photoshop
