Director, Financial Services –
Brooklyn Business Solutions Center

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce seeks a Director of Financial Services for the Brooklyn Business Solutions Center (BSC).  The Brooklyn Business Solutions Center is a partnership between the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, created to provide high-quality, user-friendly business development services to entrepreneurs and business owners.  Core services provided by the BSC include:  Business plan development, financing assistance, technical assistance related to running a business, access to incentive programs, government facilitation, procurement information and assistance, and marketing and promotion support.

The Director of Financial Services will be primarily responsible for coordinating and executing a wide range of assistance related to small business financing. The Director will provide hands-on support with loan packaging, AR/AP, credit and cash flow analysis, as well as financial statement review.  The Director also will work directly with clients to help them determine their credit needs, understand their current financial position and develop a realistic financing plan.  It is expected that the Director will develop and maintain relationships with all major banks and other small business lending institutions, including our not-for-profit lending partners ACCIÓN NY, CAMBA and Project Enterprise.  The Director also will be responsible for developing and conducting small group workshops about issues related to small business finance, and will provide other forms of business assistance to fulfill the objectives of the Business Solutions Center and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.

Qualifications:  Candidates should have relevant experience in small business financial services as well as strong organizational, analytical, and communications skills.  Solid computer skills including proficiency in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, as well as writing skills are a must.  Database experience helpful.

Account Executive - Hiring  –
Good Help

The Good Help program is the free employment service provided by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. Good Help provides businesses that have immediate needs for entry level and skilled employees with pre-screened candidates recruited from a network of over 100 community based organizations. The Brooklyn Business Solutions Center is a walk-in center for business development sponsored by the Department of Small Business Services. Both programs serve as a resource to local businesses to assist with hiring, training and retaining their employees.

The Workforce and Business Coordinator serves as one of the primary professional staff positions within the Good Help program and the Business Solutions Center. Business development is a key factor in this role, as is the versatility to maintain dual objectives within the program. This position will report on daily functions to the Director of Good Help and the Director of the Business Solutions Center, and ultimately report to the Vice President of Workforce and Training.

Specific Duties:

  • Provide outreach to businesses to increase the number of employers providing job openings.
  • Work closely with the Brooklyn Workforce1 Career Center to coordinate recruitments, pre-screenings, and align objectives and goals for the Center.
  • Organize, manage and process pre-screening of jobseekers by conducting screening interviews to determine compatibility with specified job requirements.
  • Provide constructive feedback to referral agencies about candidates referred for open positions through use of approved internal systems.
  • Conduct field visits to businesses in an effort to determine job conditions; provide support to businesses for staffing and related workforce development business services.
  • Coordinate with employers as well as internal staff to facilitate hiring events as necessary, including screening, scheduling and appropriate follow up.
  • Participate in both internal and external events as necessary, including job fairs, trade shows, networking events and seminars for business development purposes.
  • Assist with and in some cases make appropriate referrals for businesses needing related services such as legal assistance, benefits, human resource assistance, etc.
  • Support the Director(s) and Vice President on special projects and programs including but not limited to research, marketing, application, execution and follow up.

Requirements: Two years experience in business development, outside sales, workforce development, staffing or human resources preferred. Program and project management experience highly desirable. Energetic, proactive, and organized. Must be proficient in MS Office including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access (candidates will be tested on their skills).

Hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. with some early mornings, evenings and weekends as necessary.

Director, Real Estate and Development –
Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce seeks a Director of Real Estate and Development to lead and manage the organization’s Real Estate and Development (RED) department.  The program works with an extensive network of professionals from the real estate, development and finance communities that actively identifies boroughwide opportunities for business attraction and retention.   

Responsibilities include:

  • Real Estate and Development (RED) Committee Liaison.  Serve as Chamber staff liaison to the RED Committee, a group of Chamber Member volunteers from the real estate, development and finance communities that works together to identify boroughwide opportunities for business attraction and retention.  The Brooklyn Chamber's RED Committee Members share proprietary real estate news and research at select Chamber meetings and events.
  • Program Development.  Collaborate with the RED Committee to plan seminars and panels related to timely, local real estate topics (re-zonings, Brownfield programs, waterfront development, changing demographics, etc.).  Other RED activities include networking events and the annual Building Brooklyn Awards™.
  • Informational Liaison.  Assisting Chamber Members and other members of the Brooklyn business community to identify real estate opportunities throughout the borough.  Knowledge of government incentive programs to attract and retain businesses is essential.
  • Research and Advocacy.  Work with the President & CEO to develop the Chamber’s position on planning issues, re-zonings and other large-scale developments throughout the borough.  Draft and present testimony on issues related to land use, incentives and economic development.

Qualifications:  The Chamber seeks individuals with a passion for service – a desire to help people, especially our Members and other business owners, investors and others, whose efforts strengthen the Brooklyn economy.  Specific qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of and/or prior experience working with a membership organization
  • Knowledge of and/or passion for Brooklyn 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and with large groups to gain consensus
  • Keen sense of priority and organization to drive projects to timely completion
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse array of internal and external contacts
  • Superior writing and oral presentation skills
  • Experience with fundraising and program development
  • B.A. from an accredited college in urban studies, urban planning, political science, economics or a closely related field.
